Umaga is from America Samoa and a member of the famous Anoa'i wrestling family. His mother, Vera, is the sister of Afa and Sika of the Wild Samoans, and his later Umaga gimmick would be compared to their "wildness". Jr., Eddie's brother and Matt's cousin, that ended up being quickly dropped and they were sent to the was first used on April 3, 2006 on Raw. The new gimmick of UmagaUmaga character was a destructive savage and feuded with Ric Flair and Kane. Umaga was impressive as he never got pinned by anyone during 34 televised matches. That came to an end in January of 2007 when John Cena rolled him up for a pin during an WWE Championship match. Umaga was named Mr. McMahon's representative at Wrestlemania 23 in the Mr. McMahon-Donald Trump battle of the billionaires feud. UmagaLashly and lost his Intercontinental title to Santino Marella, he would later get his belt back with a match against Santino. On September 3, 2007 Umaga would lose the title as it went back to Jeff Hardy after Hardy beat him. In June of 2008 Umaga was drafted from Raw to Smackdown. After a short rivalry with Mr. Kennedy and a feud that looked like it was about to begin with the Big Show; Umaga suffered a torn PCL at a Smackdown live event.
Umaga finally made his return on the January 30, 2009 edition of Smackdown with a easy win over Jimmy Wang Yang. Umaga then suffered his first defeat since his return by losing to Triple H by disqualification, after Triple H was attacked by The Legacy (Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase, Jr. and Cody Rhodes).
After a short hiatus, he returned on the May 1, 2009 episode of SmackDown, attacking CM Punk on multiple occasions, repeatedly interrupting Punk's attempts to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase. At Judgment Day, Umaga defeated Punk, and on the May 22, 2009 episode of SmackDown, he spoke in English for the first time under the Umaga gimmick, when he challenged Punk to a Samoan strap match which Punk would accept.
Umaga and Punk battled once again on June 7, 2009 at Extreme Rules in their Samoan Strap match. In this match, both men were fastened at opposite ends of the Samoan Strap. The wrestler who touched all corners of the ring in succession first would be called the winner. Umaga was not able to win this time as Punk hoisted Umaga in the GTS then touched the fourth turnbuckle to win it.
The next day, June 8th, 2009 Umaga was surprisingly released by the WWE as the WWE released the following statement on their website. World Wrestling Entertainment has come to terms on the release of SmackDown Superstar Umaga as of today, June 8, 2009. WWE wishes Umaga the best in all future endeavors.
