Finlay is definitely what he claims to be, the man who loves to fight. He’s proven it too time and time again. He is seen by fellow wrestlers as a brawler and one of the toughest opponents to face. The Irishman held 16 major championships before coming to the USA in the mid 90’s. He went to the WCW and wrestled there from 1995 to 2000. He then took some time off away from the ring and finally started working on a comeback in 2004. In early 2006 Finlay made his debut on Smackdown fighting Matt Hardy and got disqualified, fighting real dirty in the match and quickly establishing himself as a bad guy. In May we started seeing a “little bastard” (later known as Hornswoggle), a leprechaun who seemed to live under the ring who would come out and help Finlay cheat and win matches. Finaly has held the WWE Smackdowns United States Championship and came to Smackdown as a heel but lately has been a face along with Hornswoggle. Finlay continued his feud with the great Khali who he beat in December, 2007 at Armageddon. Both he and Khali were participants in the 2008 Royal Rumble but Finlay was disqualified quickly as he went into the ring before his time and smacked both Mark Henry and Big Daddy V with his shillelagh. Lately Finlay has been appearing more over at RAW due to the Hornswoggle-Vince McMahan thing going on over there. Mr. McMahan had been showing Hornswoggle some tough love that seemed a little to tough to Finlay. Over at RAW JBL had informed McMahan that Hornswoggle was not really his son and that Hornswoggle's real father was Finlay. On the March 3, 2008 edition of RAW, Finlay admitted that Hornswoggle was his son and later faced JBL in a Belfast Brawl match at Wrestlemania XXIV. Finlay was not able to beat JBL at Wrestlemania and suffered the defeat. On the April 11th edition of Smackdown Finaly and Hornswoggle made their official return to Smackdown after going through all that drama over there on Raw. On June 29, 2008 at Night of Champions Finlay and his son Hornswoggle challenged Miz and John Morrison for the tag team titles but where unsuccessful. Finlay and Hornswoggle had another chance again at the Great American Bash in a four way tag team match but once again were unsuccessful.
Over at ECW Finlay began being challenged by Mike Knox. Knox accused Finlay of being soft because Finlay would dance around with his son Hornswoggle and invite kids from the audience to dance in the ring. On the August 26 edition of ECW Finlay and Knox had a match with Finlay getting the victory and proving that though he is a family man he still is the man who loves to fight.
On September 7, 2008 Finlay competed in the ECW Scramble match at Unforgiven against the then ECW Champion Mark Henry, Miz, Matt Hardy and Chavo Guerrero. The match was won by Matt Hardy who became the new ECW Champion that night.
On November 11, 2008 on ECW Finlay would battle fellow face Matt Hardy for the ECW Championship. In a hard fought match Matt Hardy was able to defend his title after hitting the Twist of Fate on Finlay.
Finlay would battle Mark Henry December 14, 2008 at Armegeddon in a Belfast Brawl. With a little help from Hornswoggle and a shilaleigh, Finlay was able to get the win over the worlds strongest man.
On the February 3rd edition of ECW Finlay beat ECW champion Jack Swagger ending the match with a Celtic Cross and pin in non title match. Finlay became the first to beat Swagger since Swagger joined ECW.
This led up to a ECW Championship match for Finlay against Swagger on February 15, 2008 at No Way Out. Finlay was not able to get the win that night though as Jack Swagger would successfully defend his ECW title.
On April 5th, 2009 Finlay competed at Wrestlemania 25 in a 8 man Money in the Bank matchup. Unfortunately for Finlay he did not succeed in winning the match as CM Punk won the MITB match for the second year in a row.
In the 2009 Supplemental Draft, Finlay and Hornswoggle were separated when Hornswoggle was drafted to Raw.
In late May 2009, Finlay suffered a legitimate eye injury, sidelining him temporarily. He returned on June 16, attacking Christian, Tommy Dreamer and Jack Swagger.
At The Bash he participated in a Championship Scramble match for the ECW Championship, but was unsuccessful.
He was traded to the SmackDown brand on June 29, 2009. His first match returning to the brand was against Ricky Ortiz which Finlay won.
