Gregory Helms started wrestling off wrestling in many independent promotions. In 2000 he and his good friend Shannon Moore signed with WCW. He became known as Sugar Shane Helms and was WCW cruiserweight champion when the WWF bought WCW. Along with the transaction Sugar Shane Helms came to the WWF and began going by his real name Gregory Helms. Later he became Hurricane Helms and would wear a super hero costume, this character became a fan favorite and he became face. In 2002 he came to Smackdown but later that year went to RAW where he won the tag team title with Kane. Gregory Helms years later came out of the costume and turned heel, going by Gregory Helms. During the 2006 Royal Rumble Gregory Helms was still a member of the RAW brand and he ended up winning Smackdown's WWE Cruiserweight Championship. He was able to participate because the match was open to all formal cruiserweight champions. Helms won after hitting the 'shinning wizard' on Funaki. This brought him back to Smackdown. On Smackdown he started feuding with Nunzio, Scottie 2 Hottie and other cruiserweights. He started getting cocky and started saying that basically he is better than all other cruiserweights. This led to all cruiserweights invading the ring at once and each one of them performing their signature move on Helms. He proved to many time after time that he deserved the cruiserweight championship by holding the title longer than anyone in WWE history and also holding a title (any title) longer than anyone ever on Smackdown. In May of '07' Gregory Helms suffered a neck injury that he had to have surgery on and spent much time away from wrestling.
Helms returned to SmackDown on the September 19, 2008 edition. Throughout the show, he gave short video promos on the upper right hand corner of the television screen, these were called Hurrapops, he also started referring to himself by his old name - Hurricane Helms. He made fun of United States Champion Shelton Benjamin by saying that the price of gold just went down. He also made fun of the WWE Tag Team Champions Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder by calling them Curt and Jerk. In the following weeks Helms has been appearing on that upper right hand corner of the screen making short comments as a WWE Superstar heel makes his way to the ring.
On the November 28 episode of SmackDown, a "Hurrapop" appeared in which Helms announced that he would make his return to the ring on the next episode of SmackDown. On the December 5 episode of SmackDown, Helms defeated Montel Vontavious Porter in his ring return. He then started a feud with Shelton Benjamin over the United States championship. Hurricane Helms got his chance at the United States Championship on the December 26, 2008 edition of Smackdown. Though very impressive in the match he was not able to beat Shelton in the match as Shelton defended his United State title.
On April 15, 2009, Helms was drafted to the ECW brand as part of the 2009 Supplemental Draft. Helms made his ECW debut as a backstage interviewer on April 28, 2009, reverting back to his Gregory Helms ring name, interviewing Evan Bourne.
He started a storyline where, while he was interviewing someone, a scripted accident would occur, leading to Helms leaving the interview seconds before the person in distress was saved by Helms in the Hurricane costume. Helms would then re-appear at the interview in the same clothes as before, thus creating the illusion that he was a real superhero under a protected identity in real life.
